Butch Meily has been separated from his wife for 8 years. They live in the Philippines, where divorce remains illegal. Mired in legal and emotional limbo, an unlikely loophole presents a way out. The U.S. territory of Guam offers a “7 Day Residency Divorce.” One spouse could spend a week on Guam, establish residence, and get an internationally recognized divorce. Their lawyer offered to book the hotel. Our story finds the 72-year-old Butch alone on an island to end his marriage. He's convinced the divorce will change his life; happiness at the stroke of a pen. But vacation can be uncomfortably meditative. As each day brings Butch closer to signing, he's forced to confront his loss.
