Narrative
Living Harriet Tubman is a short documentary film that chronicles the remarkable story of Nancy Whittle, a grandchild of slaves who has spent 30 years portraying Harriet Tubman at contentious Civil War reenactments. To culminate her career as a reenactor, Nancy enlists her community to produce a reenactment unlike anything before at a Civil War event. Delivered to a packed house, Nancy portrays a slave escaping from a plantation in a heart-wrenching scene that confronts the white-washed stories of a typical Civil War reenactment. The film also follows Nancy on a heartfelt exploration of her personal connection to Tubman, visiting the Underground Railroad in Maryland.Audience: Adults 25–65, educators, documentary audiences, photographers, historians, museum-goers, students, and people interested in race, public memory, and American identity.
