Garry studied Journalism and Photography at the London College of Communication and Film and TV at the Irish National Film School. After graduating in 1990, he worked as a DOP in New York and London, before finally settling in Ireland, where he has been a documentary filmmaker for the last 20 years. In that time Garry has directed over 110 hours of documentaries for European and American broadcasters, in over 25 countries worldwide. Keane’s documentaries have been nominated for 20 Irish Film & Television Awards; of these, his films have won 9, including two in the 'Best Director' category in 2013 and 2018. Garry's feature documentary, 'Gaza' was five years in the making and made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Jan 2019. It went on to be screened in over 60 international film festivals, garnering 15 award nominations and winning 9. 'Gaza' was Ireland’s entry to the 2020 Oscars in the, 'Best International Feature' category and was listed in the top 20 of The Irish Times 'Top 50 Irish Films of All Time'. Garry's feature documentary, 'In the Shadow of Beirut', had its world premiere at DocEdge in June 2023. It won 3 awards: 'Best International Documentary', 'Best Cinematography' and 'Best Humanitarian Film'. 'In the Shadow of Beirut' was Ireland’s official entry to the 2024 Oscars in the 'Best International Feature category' and is long listed for 'Best Documentary'. 'A Quiet Love' is Garry’s latest feature documentary captures the remarkable love stories of three Deaf couples told through Irish Sign Language: a decades-long forbidden romance across a religious divide, a same-sex couple navigating parenthood with Deaf and hearing children, and a Deaf boxer and his hearing partner facing a life-altering choice. 'A Quiet Love' is a cinematic celebration of resilience, connection, and enduring love; featuring an immersive soundscape. It is Ireland’s first feature film in Irish Sign Language, produced by a Deaf and hearing team. The film has enjoyed a remarkable run on the international circuit since its World Premiere at the 2025 Doc Edge Film Festival in New Zealand, where it won the category award 'Being Oneself'. It also picked up the 'Audience Choice Award' at the San Diego International Film Festival, underscoring its powerful emotional resonance with global audiences and also won the, 'Global Production Award' for 'Diversity, Equity & Inclusion' in Cannes 2025. 'A Quiet Love' was selected to launch Singapore’s first ever documentary festival in December and also screened at Flow Festival, Australia and the Newport Beach Film Festival in California.
