Wim Wenders is an Oscar-nominated German filmmaker born Ernst Wilhelm Wenders on August 14, 1945, in Düsseldorf, Germany. He initially studied medicine and philosophy before pursuing art in Paris, where he developed a passion for cinema. After returning to Germany, he attended the University of Television and Film Munich and began his career as a film critic and director, gaining early recognition with films like "The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick," "Alice in the Cities," and "Kings of the Road" as part of the New German Cinema movement alongside Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Werner Herzog. His international breakthrough came with "The American Friend," followed by the critically acclaimed "Paris, Texas," which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and "Wings of Desire," earning him further acclaim. Though later narrative films had mixed reception, Wenders found renewed success with documentaries such as "Buena Vista Social Club" and "Pina," both of which received Academy Award nominations.
