Lady Chief introduces Nana Afoakwa Kyerewa I, the only female clan chief in her hometown Kukurantumi, Ghana — and only the second woman in her clan’s centuries-old history to ever contest the role, despite a local head chief’s refusal to accept her. Through her own telling, Nana revisits the improbable path that led her here: her childhood in a rural village, national acclaim as a runner, a departure from Ghana with an unlikely Ohioan husband, and a return fueled by unshakable devotion to her people. The film culminates in the annual Ahwie celebration, with the whole village honoring her as chief.
